Rock Hall ruminations: Steve Jones is Our Hero

Steve Jones, right, earns a Gold Medal for his efforts in the War on the Hall.
Yes, we've looked ahead to the potential Class of 2013, but despite what Boston said, it can't hurt to look back. Especially if it's someone else doing the looking.

Henceforth, here's three reactions to this year's inductions that we discovered this week, ranging from awesome to about as puzzling as "John From Cincinnati."

1) WAR blasts the induction of The Beastie Boys, courtesy of TMZ. That's right, this WAR. The WAR with this guy in it. Here's what founding member Howard Scott told the site:

"How could the Beastie Boys get in before us when they sampled
War's music on their first album?! I'll eat their platinum records!"

Tobolowsky's greatest role: Ned Ryerson in "Groundhog Day."
So basically, Scott is saying that WAR should get in because the Beastie Boys sampled them on "Slow Ride." (Even though "Slow Ride" is a better song, but whatever). Or because WAR came before the Beastie Boys. But that's like Stephen Tobolowsky complaining that he should have gotten an Oscar before Javier Bardem just because the erstwhile Ned Ryerson did his first movie in 1976, 31 years before "No Country For Old Men." Yeah, they're both actors, but Tobolowsky is one of "those guys" who usually fills goofy, off-kilter parts while Bardem takes on serious, often creepy roles.

2) While pontificating on a theoretical Guns 'N' Roses reunion that will never happen, singer Axl Rose essentially told the Los Angeles Times that if Duff and Slash would do it, that would count as a real-deal GNR reformation, and that guitarist Izzy Stradlin and original drummer Steven Adler are not necessary ingredients. Via

Izzy not essential to GNR? Whaaat?
"Because, really, you can get guys from the ['Use Your Illusion'] thing, but the only thing that would make it would be Duff [McKagan] and Slash, really. It's nothing against Izzy [Stradlin] and it's nothing against Steven [Adler], or anything like that."

Uh, what? That's like Frank Black leaving Kim Deal out of a Pixies reunion and calling it legit. Or d*ckhead Sting reuniting The Police without d*ckhead drummer Stuart Copeland. Or R.E.M. calling themselves R.E.M. without drummer Bill Berry. Wait, uh ...

3) Sex Pistols guitarist Steve Jones arbitrarily decided to come out and endorse Johnny Rotten's decision to lead the band into a snub of the Hall when they were inducted in 2006, and used it as bait to lure Contact Music into an interview in which he absolutely annihilated The Hall. Steve, if you're out there, we want you to write for Cleveland Does Not Rock. (side note: In the photo on the site you'll note that Contact Music apparently has confused this Steve Jones with the Sex Pistol Steve Jones. Oopsers). Anyway, Jones said this:

"Each year it (induction ceremony) gets lamer and lamer. A bunch of old f**ks kissing each other's a**, stroking each other. It's got nothing to do with rock 'n' roll whatsoever."

The Case Against GnR and RCHP

What I like about 2012’s list of nominees are the bands I hate: Guns ‘n’ Roses and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

By hate, I mean once loved these bands. Man, I loved them. They were once everything rock and roll embodied. Completely rad and kick ass.

I didn’t stop liking them because I became an ironic self-congratulatory hipster who liked them, then disliked them in favor of some Williamsburg suck squad making hip-pop when theramins and beards, only to restart liking them because retro is cool again again. Ha. Ha.

I stopped liking them because I’ve exhausted myself trying to find just one thing in their post-1993 catalogues that bears a semblance to rock and roll.

If both bands would have stopped in 1993, there is no question both of them would be locks.

Duff and GNR rock it.

Pretty cool to see Duff join Axl on stage for last night's Guns N' Roses show in Seattle. Perhaps it wasn't that surprising since his current band Loaded opened the show - which for those in attendance, it probably made a jam seem like a lock. Duff's appearance might suggest (or it might not) that we'll see him on stage with Axl at the Rock Hall inductions at the very least.

He addressed that subject in his latest column for the Seattle Weekly:

I've done my best to avoid doing any interviews that pertain to our induction, and maybe this column will serve as all I really need to say for now. I am a grown-up now, and hope that we can achieve some grace and class when that ceremony comes. But in the end, I am only responsible for myself.

Tickets for the induction ceremonies (happening next April here in Cleveland) went on sale this morning and sold out (of course) in minutes. For those lucky enough to snag tickets, it should be a good night. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens with GNR and I'll also enjoy seeing Rod Stewart participate in the Faces/Small Faces induction (among many other things).

GNR in Portland

GNR in Portland

WOW! What a show. I am suffering alittle Bangover. Mike, Brandon,Mark ect. you guys Rock Hard. Sold out show was awsome. Hair assult was good then Appitite came out a set the place on fire. My mechelle fallowed by Rocket Queen just kick the entire crowd in the face with high energy sleezy Rock and Roll. I swear i needed a shower after the 4th song. Appitite for Deception is on a HNL [hole nether level] the quality of the music was so good my 8 guest asked me if this was a time warp these guys were the real thing. The sold out crowd was jumping there wasn't a single but in any seat the whole night.
Absolutly the best ticket in town. Rock On

Great Guns! Chances not good for GNR Rock Hall reunion

Great Guns! Chances not good for GNR Rock Hall reunion

If we can't get a reunion, can we at least get the leather hat?
It seemed like a shoe-in: Guns 'N' Roses gets in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Axl and Slash make nice for at least one night, and the band finally reunites for one freaking set consisting of two or three freaking songs.

But guess what? Probably not gonna happen, at least according to two former GNR members.

- Matt Sorum, drummer of the band's wheelhouse period, predicts a train wreck at the induction ceremony a la the Sex Pistols' entry to the Hall, with no Guns Reunion. Via Blabbermouth via Australia's The Vine.

- On his blog at Seattle Weekly, Duff McKagan says he doesn't see a Guns reunion happening.

BUT

- Duff gets onstage with Axl and the current lineup after his band Loaded opens for Guns in Seattle.

AND

Axl ejects a fan in Vancouver, perhaps hinting that the frontman is returning to his unruly ways, perhaps hinting that he'll pine for the glory days, and decide that his spat with Slash over something he doesn't even remember wasn't worth it is over. And Slash agrees, and, and ...

What's your take? Will a Guns reunion happen? Should it happen? Does it need to? Do you care? COMMENT.

Centuries of Style: The History of Louis Vuitton

For thousands of fashion-conscious women around the world, there is no accessory that imparts the status and prestige of a Louis Vuitton handbag. Without even thinking twice, enthusiasts of the brand willingly hand over thousands of dollars for just one purse. The bags have graced the arms of high-profile celebrities, supermodels, and socialites as the ultimate status symbol.

What is it that sets Louis Vuitton handbags apart from the rest? Why have these extravagant accessories become so iconic in the fashion world?

For many, the appeal lies in the brand’s long and prestigious history. Louis Vuitton is one of the most enduring design houses of our time. Born in 1821, the company’s namesake designer began making the first pieces—premium luggage—and selling them in his first store in Paris, France in 1854. With many travelers frequenting cruise ships and trains, consumers gravitated to the line’s steamer bag, flat case, and the “Keepall” overnight bag that remains one of the company’s most popular travel pieces today. Vuitton went on to offer additional travel accessories, including mini trunks, carry-on bags, cosmetics cases, jewelry storage boxes, diaper bags, computer cases, and more.

When the travel pieces achieved great popularity, Louis moved on to make fine timepieces. When his son Georgie joined the company, they began producing trunks, duffels, and handbags. It was Georgie who introduced the now trademark monogrammed canvas to make it more difficult for others to replicate the Louis Vuitton handbags. 31 years after opening the first store, Louis Vuitton introduced a second store in London, with nearly 130 more worldwide locations opening throughout the 1900s. The company’s popularity, exclusivity, and prestige continued to soar over the decades.

Over the generations, the Louis Vuitton Company has demonstrated a commitment to retaining the finest designer talents. Since merging with Moet Hennessey in 1987, it has retained the services of world-famous designer Marc Jacobs, with Patrick Vuitton overseeing the design and production processes. Today, Louis Vuitton handbags and accessories generate millions of dollars in revenue each year, with the brand’s iconic reputation earning it comparisons to Prada, Fendi, and Gucci. In addition to enjoying widespread popularity throughout America, Louis Vuitton purses, wallets, and sunglasses are also in high demand throughout Korea, Japan, China, India, Africa, and a host of other countries.

Although modern innovations have been introduced to streamline the production process, Louis Vuitton’s leather artisans continue to demonstrate a meticulous attention to detail and painstaking craftsmanship in the creation of each Louis Vuitton handbag. The company adheres to its traditional apprentice system, where master leather workers train novices on the process to ensure unrivaled quality and longevity.

Popular Louis Vuitton Offerings

Over the generations, several trends have emerged as some of the label’s most popular:

• The Speedy is based on the design premise of the louis vuitton briefcases , but it qualifies as a Louis Vuitton handbag. Its roomy main compartment takes everything you can throw into it. Choose from four versatile styles.

• The Neverfull is quickly becoming one of the most in-demand Louis Vuitton purses. Available in three sizes, it’s offered in a variety of fabrics, colors, and patterns. Its generous proportions provide plenty of storage space without adding cumbersome bulk.

Axl Rose's appetite is for today's Guns N' Roses

December 21, 2011|By Randall Roberts, Los Angeles Times Pop Music Critic

Asked if music was still the driving factor in his life that it once was, Rose pauses. "Well, it wasn't for a long time. It was hard to make myself want to do the old songs again. It was like, I wasn't going around my house dancing to 'Jungle.' To even figure out how to even make myself move to those songs — and how I was going to move to them — that was a big thing to figure out in '06."

Guns n' Roses Biography

At a time when pop was dominated by dance music and pop-metal, Guns N' Roses brought raw, ugly rock & roll crashing back into the charts. They were not nice boys; nice boys don't play rock & roll. They were ugly, misogynistic, and violent; they were also funny, vulnerable, and occasionally sensitive, as their breakthrough hit, "Sweet Child O' Mine," showed. While Slash and Izzy Stradlin ferociously spit out dueling guitar riffs worthy of Aerosmith or the Stones, Axl Rose screeched out his tales of sex, drugs, and apathy in the big city. Meanwhile, bassist Duff McKagan and drummer Steven Adler were a limber rhythm section who kept the music loose and powerful. Guns N' Roses' music was basic and gritty, with a solid hard, bluesy base; they were dark, sleazy, dirty, and honest -- everything that good hard rock and heavy metal should be. There was something refreshing about a band that could provoke everything from devotion to hatred, especially since both sides were equally right. There hadn't been a hard rock band this raw or talented in years, and they were given added weight by Rose's primal rage, the sound of confused, frustrated white trash vying for his piece of the pie. As the '80s became the '90s, there simply wasn't a more interesting band around, but owing to intra-band friction and the emergence of alternative rock, Rose's supporting cast gradually disintegrated, as he spent years in seclusion.

Guns N' Roses legend back for Dublin gig

Legendary rocker Duff McKagan is set to return to Ireland with his band Loaded.

The ex Velvet-Revolver and Guns N' Roses bassist will play The Academy in Dublin this Thursday, November 3.
Duff will also launch his autobiography, It's So Easy (And Other Lies), at HMV in Belfast the day before.
The rock legend was quick to warn fans that those who are expecting his book to be a Guns N' Roses tell-all may be disappointed.
He said: "I didn't tell any secrets of any ex-bandmates or current bandmates or me and my wife."

Guns N' Roses talk new album

Guns N' Roses axeman DJ Ashba has said that he and frontman Axl Rose are working on material for the follow-up to Chinese Democracy.
1 of 1 Axl Rose

''I can say making a new album absolutely is our main priority," he told 80s metal nostalgia website Mama's Fallen Angels. "And I cannot wait to get working on it. Axl has tonnes and tonnes of stuff recorded as it is.
"I mean, he sits there in his hotel room and he'll play me hours of stuff. And I've written over ten songs, I think 12 songs now, for him that he really likes."
He added: "I can't give anybody a definite date, because I'm not going to give anybody false hope. But it's absolutely everybody's goal to get out an album within a reasonable amount of time."
Rose recently hinted that the original lineup

Permanent Mold Castings

This mistrust is partially the reason why Rose's current management team is more family than business partner. It's headed by Beta Lebeis, a Brazilian woman Rose met when she was his ex-girlfriend Stephanie Seymour's assistant; she began working for him after his tempestuous relationship with Seymour ended in 1993. Lebeis' two adult children, Fernando and Vanessa, round out the management group. Lebeis says that this arrangement is the result of an ultimatum she gave Rose after Guns N' Roses' most recent manager, Katsis, left the fold after less than a month on the job.
"We decided, 'No more managers,'" said Lebeis a few days after the Seattle concert. "Between me and Fernando and my daughter, we're dealing with the management." Lebeis added that she characterizes Rose as "more than a son to me," and that after Katsis' departure, "I told [Rose] if he hires another manager, I quit." One of the Lebeis three is almost always at Rose's side, be it in paparazzi photos or side stage during concerts, near the little makeshift dressing room that Rose frequently races into during guitar solos, or on that rare occasion when he actually sits down with a journalist.
As the clock pushes toward 4 a.m., Rose's tone has shifted. He still has to do his regular hour-long vocal exercises before retiring for the night, and the venom of earlier in the evening he'd directed against various players in the music industry seems to have left his system.

Guns N' Roses in Seattle

It's been a whirlwind year for the notoriously unpredictable and polarizing Rose. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame recently announced Guns N' Roses' induction, 25 years after he and former core members Slash, Izzy Stradlin, Duff McKagan and Steven Adler set the Sunset Strip, and then the world, on fire. The announcement prompted speculation that at the April 14 rock hall ceremony in Cleveland, the original "Appetite for Destruction" lineup — a historically acrimonious lot with the opinionated Rose at the center — might perform together for the first time in two decades.
But this positive ray comes amid a stormy 2011 that has seen Rose, 49, fire two managers in the last year, the most recent of which, Peter Katsis, was let go in early December. Since the dissolution of that first lineup, the iconic singer has released just one album, "Chinese Democracy," which he spent 13 years and millions of dollars making. And his current tour is part of a settlement agreement with former GNR manager (and Live Nation Entertainment executive chairman) Irving Azoff that dictated the band do a number of performances with Live Nation as the promoter, and Rose is worried that it's not being properly marketed. He and Guns N' Roses bring this tour to the Forum on Wednesday night.

Reporting from Seattle — Axl Rose is wearing a white cotton bathrobe and white tube socks, relaxing on a couch backstage Friday night after a three-hour concert at Seattle's Key Arena, where he'd snaked his way through 34 songs with a version of the band he co-founded a quarter-century ago, Guns N' Roses. Hard-rock icons
are among this year's batch of first-time nominees to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ballot, along with goth-pop forefathers the Cure and hip-hop pioneers Eric B. & Rakim, the organization announced today. Joan Jett & the Blackhearts and Heart also lead the list of first-timers.

Also receiving their first Rock Hall nods are the Small Faces/Faces, the Spinners, Rufus with Chaka Khan, and Freddie King. Also on the ballot are returning nominees Donna Summer, Donovan, Laura Nyro, and War. The winners will be inducted at the ceremony April 14 in Cleveland. The event will be open to the public.

Artists become eligible for nomination 25 years after releasing their first single or album. More than 500 voters will receive ballots allowing them to weigh in on who from this crop of nominees should make it into the Rock Hall.

Guns N' Roses' nod comes at a busy time for Axl Rose and his bandmates. GNR recently unveiled a U.S. tour that will kick off on October 28 in Orlando. Check out the latest additions to the tour over at Ticketmaster.

Leading up to the induction ceremony, the Rock Hall has 10 days of festivities planned. Events will include tours of the newly redesigned museum, the launch of what the organization says will be a "major" new exhibit, and the opening of the museum's new library and archives.
